DICKSON

It was a bitter, stormy Arctic night, and I pictured roadside homes with families and hot coffee on the table. The snow jam was an emergency that touched Dickinson itself. The scene, beyond the cars and lights, was Desolation itself, the Greenland ice sheet in the darkness. I watched everything impassively, rereading Barthes's passage on Japanese chopsticks for the thousandth time: "The chopstick divides, separates, pushes aside, nibbles, instead of cutting and grasping, like our cutlery; it never violates the food: it untangles it little by little (in the case of herbs), or else undoes it (in the case of fish and shellfish), thus rediscovering the natural fissures of matter (in this, closer to the primitive finger than the knife). Finally, and this is perhaps its most beautiful function, the double chopstick transports the food, whether when, crossed like two hands, supporting and no longer grasping, it insinuates itself under the flake of rice and extends it, lifting it to the diner's mouth, or when (in an ancient gesture from all over the East) it slides the food snow from the bowl to the lips, like a shovel. In all these uses, in all these gestures it implies, the chopstick opposes our knife (and its predatory substitute, the fork): It is the instrument of food that refuses to cut, to grasp, to mutilate, to pierce (very limited gestures, set back in the kitchen preparation: the fishmonger who skins, before our eyes, the live salmon, exorcises once and for all, in a preliminary sacrifice, the murder of food); through the toothpick, food is no longer a prey that is violated (meat upon which we sink our teeth), but a harmoniously transferred substance; it transforms the previously divided matter into bird food, and the rice into a stream of milk.” Finally (I thought, after reading) the bus driver, a good and maniacal man, was able to start and rev the diesel engine. The bus with the “Chicago” sign drove ahead, uncertainly amid the blizzard. Within minutes, we returned to dry ground after hours of tribulation. But for me it was a different “spectacle”, receding like a temporal groove in my peripheral vision. Then that crowded café and the excitement of Friday morning—mainly because of the traffic jam caused by the snow. Thoughts producing tumultuous, undulating, and inflamed resonances. Certainly, ideas are always stronger than facts; otherwise, desire would be less beautiful than pleasure, and it is more powerful, it generates it.

However, my personal desire compels me to teach you to feel and act as a warrior. I personally believe that being a warrior is more fitting than anything else. Therefore, I have sought to teach you these forces as a sorcerer perceives them because only under their terrifying impact can one become a warrior. To see without first being a warrior would weaken you; it would give you a false meekness, a desire to sink into oblivion; your body would spoil because you would become indifferent. My personal obligation is to make you a warrior so that you do not fall apart

A warrior should only be prepared for battle. I've also heard you say that your parents damaged your spirit. I believe the human spirit is something that is damaged very easily, although not by the same actions you call damaging. I believe your parents did damage you, making you overindulgent.
"The spirit of a warrior is not geared for surrender and complaint, nor is it geared for winning or losing. The spirit of a warrior is only geared for fighting, and every fight is the warrior's last battle on earth. Therefore, the outcome matters very little to them. In their last battle on earth, the warrior lets their spirit flow free and clear. And while they fight their battle, knowing that their will is impeccable, the warrior laughs and laughs."

From any point of view, people are ignorant, they know nothing, they do not have the minimum of culture, the level is the lowest ever seen in human history, alienation, ugliness, the inability to look reality in the eye, existential cowardice, the lack of perspective for personal development, imprisonment in a lazy and illiterate matrix made of rhythms of partying and resting elaborated by the market to keep people stupid and harmless.

More or less leveled from below by the Catholic and Evangelical Churches, rich and poor; the former escaping upward, vertically, toward the refined strata of consciousness (incense, teas, wines, expensive chandeliers, air conditioning, silver candelabras, and Hindu elephant statuettes); the latter, swelling the mass that throws itself into the lap of Exu, the devil. Think about it: ever since the upper class decided not to exert any exasperating coercion on freedom of religious worship, each social segment seeks imaginary compensations that suit them, that suit their own type of need --- the poor, a savage and threatening compensation for their social humiliation; the rich, a refined complement that enhances their daily lives of luxury and comfort. To the poor, the warrior religions of the barbarians; to the rich, the serene, self-satisfied karmic Buddhism, as long as the police's salaries are paid on time. In the middle of it all, a vast, muddy puddle of illiterate Christianity.

He says it's a modest position, preferring the WSJ or Bloomberg, and that at the moment he can't boast about his own investments in Nasdaq --- under the Democratic administration, they've collapsed. According to him, working in this area is like turning the crank of a barrel organ for monkeys taught to repeat the same number every time the media says WAR, OIL, INFLATION, INTEREST, PRESIDENTIAL SUCCESSION --- in light of America's international responsibilities? Joke, right? (Afghanistan, Ukraine). Interests, not responsibilities. And it seems that next year's Grand Promotion of the Democratic candidate, the current president, will be controversial, at least until the crucial moment. In 2016, Obama also went easy on Clinton. A federal executive tormented and harassed by its own rank and file, lost in a quasi-imaginary narrative dispute that irresistibly tends toward cacophony whenever the web of military and oil seizures is evoked, which is frying the people's expectations with the loss of purchasing power—an endless litany of efforts to control inflation, you know? The expectation is that the country will stop growing, with inflation at more than half its current level, if the Fed continues to raise interest rates little by little until the end of 2024. Hehehe!

Today, it is not the ideological privilege of Marxists to perceive the subjection and servitude of people under the American Empire. In my case, from being an ace of the nascent cultural industry in Brazil in the 1970s, I was reduced to a lost soul with no market appeal, simply because my work environment evolved from the oligarchic interpersonal terrain to an instantaneous mechanism of totally technological capture, dominated by record labels, marketers, and banks. Parties, contacts, and criminal records no longer make any difference: there is an entire production line in place, programmed to convert any trash that stands out from the crowd into an immediately disposable and profitable business. When I was active, we still talked about artists and events; it was a matter of socially combining things, from a perspective of cultural totality. Today, however, whatever appears to be trending on social media is quickly shoved into robotic studios, and a program of immediate merchandise circulation is activated ---

Modulation, modeling, computerization, and quantitative encryption, a world of sound engineering connected in real time to immense bank accounts that pop up on the stock exchanges all day long until, overnight, they decide to gather drunken crowds in some stadium parking lot, crowds of indebted people whose cortexes will be beaten until they accept the brutal or depressing suggestions of human relationships that a noise set to music by robots has decided is "life."

Channeling illusions through the servitude and subjection of the people, taken to the extreme of perversity by the technological colonization of "life," determining what to hear, what to see, what to like, and what to imitate, all on a vast scale. The Empire is a global enterprise of compulsory subjectivation (social subjection to the axiomatic machine of the State at the service of Capital), creating a regime of widespread internal servitude where mutual communication is merely the psychological excrement socially engendered by the people's relationship with the media and social, cultural, political, economic, and military platforms. It is a world where information no longer has anything human about it, merely the figurative becoming of Capital itself.

A person who reads the newspaper every day realizes (or should realize) that reality, according to the media, is merely an essentially axiomatic hologram, a game of axioms and refrains ridiculously simplistic in its inputs and outputs --- but equipped with a phenomenal compelling force, derived from the concentration of media ownership. Through the media, the State, in the service of Capital, adds or suppresses the necessary axioms, at an ever-tedious pace designed to avoid alarms. Thus, it maintains and reproduces order according to circumstances, without any unforeseen social mobility coercing its gears --- to reassure the people, politicians talk about reducing unemployment, controlling inflation, moderating interest rates, increasing GDP (axioms, axioms) within an invariable context that rhetorically and publicly works on the idea of time and contingency, that there is no alternative

(What escapes the axiomatic bolt of order is the result of uncontrollable flows of migratory, starving, and desperate people, the agglutination of poverty and helplessness in favelas that serve the deterritorialized economy of drugs and organized crime, now so sophisticated that it has also become political and hostile to any revolutionary demand. Obviously, this entire scourge is caused by the erratic movements of stateless Capital itself.) In periods of apprehension, distrust of the efficacy of the axioms that maintain order slows the world down, and the State is manipulated by Capital in search of compensation for the damage to its equipment: breakdowns in supply and production chains, deterioration in terms of trade, chaotic nationalist urges, non-compliance with war agreements, and defaults. The perversity of technology is to make a servitude appear voluntary, forced by the gears of human-machine systems (neither theory nor ideology: the axioms of Capital are mere operational statements (semiological refrains) that compose and integrate production, circulation, and consumption. In periods of crisis, capitalism multiplies its axioms and employs them as a political weapon to organize the capture and domination of public opinion.

The great slowness of the pandemic became a workshop of patches, adjustments, and axiomatic substitutions, followed by the terrible Keynesian slowness of the American state, resulting in inflation at the same time that a slow democratic exorcism of the fascist scar was tested in society with some degree of success (insufficient, it is feared): the animals of the Yankee gutter are praised in their submissive slowness against the animals that conspire and plan furious mobs (fertile ground for the return of old atavisms surpassed in the social and political sphere). Let's not make fun of them!, this horde of zombies teleguided by the axiomatics that dominates, by newspapers and show business, social networks and the guidelines of their content (with festive simulacra and Fancy consensus) --- reacting to each other through stimuli and phantom visions: of the world, of life, of themselves, trapped in a network of compulsory subjectivation and no less reduced to servitude than in the fascist period.

Do I mean this? You're so cynical, K. It's as if you haven't known me for thirty years. We, cogs in the machinery of capitalism, in the media or the State, it doesn't matter. We silence citizens by making them speak, poisoning them with fairy tales about defending rights and active citizenship --- thus we exclude the people below, the masses, calling them to participate. Voluntary slavery, they come. The problem is not the "scarcity of speech," as Lazzarato says, but rather "its superabundance" (...) "The consensus and conformity that its circulation presupposes and produces" (...) "within spheres strictly predetermined by MARKETING and ADVERTISING."

This is what Félix Guatari called, somewhat naively in my opinion, the "Yankee way of subjectivation" (laughs), made up of smiling media mannequins and warships full of bombs and marines, in the sense that what those blondes sympathetically announce in TV studios must be assimilated and accepted by the world or Uncle Sam will get angry: family, education, environment, religion, art, sports --- all of this is blended daily in the media blender and transformed into advertisements and Hollywood films that begin to operate on the core of memory, reasoning, sensitivity, affections, and unconscious ghosts of the masses, infecting their libidos, deconstructing their egos, and granting people practically no free will to feel and construct themselves in the face of a world that humiliates and boycotts them.

Thus, the much-vaunted constitutional freedom on which bourgeois liberalism is based conceals its subjectivizing reductionism, restricting any alternative need for human beings to be themselves to an existential shipwreck in the swamp of games and democratic simulacrum, where impulses improvise psychodramas quickly captured by the self-expressive contraption of the internet. Ultimately, all efforts to differ encounter their social and economic punishment, and in the existential testing ground of the socius, new concepts of the unconscious are proposed by a "market" always willing to grant greater expanses of freedom wherever the harvest of domesticated socialization promises a new toy for profit hunters, the intelligentsia of large corporations and their media outposts. So the global reading grid with scientific pretensions converges in a factory of axioms --- State (in direct control of the police) and Capital (in direct control of the media) begin to secrete new democratic forms of resentment, in their continued effort to model a subjectivity that constantly leaks out of society, threatening to become a schizoid, nomadic flow.

In the midst of the sensible and signifying chaos—this social field devastated by capitalist subjectivity—a world of ghosts takes hold in every reverie. And with every "good morning" from mannequins and political figures on the news, the "partial-shattered-objects" (to use Lacan), endowed with VOICE and GAZE, set off on delirious, hallucinatory lines, from which all and any neurological security has deserted and which threaten to explode in public the personality imposed by the system. And while we gaze without interest at a stretch of deserted street, mutant foci of subjectivity strain the signifying fabric of reality, soiled with media spit and advertising garbage; there are crosses on the side of the roads, crossroads, macumba dispatches constellating dark universes of reference that keep the standard Dorian family awake --- one searches for them in faces, in ceilings, in furniture, in the garden, in the building's playground: no, every fugitive idea seems to be arranged in vague, evasive periods, which ignore the sonorous and predictable fluency of everyday life, the world of work, of employment, which will have to deal with the shopping mall stores on every festive or commemorative date, enclosed in a web of a thousand dominant social redundancies totally classified and organized to suffocate and inhibit and standardize.

The corrosion of the fabric of social solidarity tends to find in repetitive psychic ways of life only the vacant gaze of the convinced addict of nihilistic technological progressivism --- and here an entire semiotics comes to its aid, using the media, politics, and "societal experts" to justify the fact that there is no alternative to the logic of social subjection and that any excess subjectivity of the masses will be neutralized by the conversion of subjects into cogs in the productive structure, more in the sense that they can never act or function alone than that the productive structure depends on them. All production of subjects is limited to identities useful to the system, which from shared common life will extract the surplus of its reproducibility, made spontaneous and converted into indices of actions that dominate and decide social and economic programs. This entire litany was already foreseen by Marx in the Gundrisse back in the 19th century, and today it has become ivy among the heralds of postmodern communism—from the Italian Autonomy to Deleuze and Guattari. Today, they are focused on trumpeting the centuries-old fact that the measuring sticks of economic policy no longer have any relationship to the real world of production and exchange, other than obedience to the rules of the Central Bank and the Federal Reserve; and that we are witnessing the historic transformation of capitalist exploitation, which occurred through the contractual labor relationship, into blatant, progressive precariousness and the plundering of surplus value excreted by the spontaneous self-reproduction of the commons. "Legal relations weaken, weak forms of governance take hold, and informal rules override codified norms---RISK becomes the foundation of all economic activity and social interaction, and then the hunting season for profit is open, when risky practices of financial speculation dominate the bowels of the stock markets and begin to play with the fate and lives of billions of people around the world.
